The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away while there was nothing on my shelf that any living creature could eat except for some barley on a shelf of mine. I kept eating from it for a long time, then I measured it and it ran out.
توفي رسول الله ﷺ وما في رفي من شيء يأكله ذو كبد إلا شطر شعير، في رف لي، فأكلت منه حتى طال علي، فكلته ففني.
Bukhari related it in the chapter on the obligation of khumus (3097), and Muslim related it in the chapter on asceticism (2973), both of them via Abu Usama, from Hisham, from his father, from Ayesha, who narrated it as mentioned.
