The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Believing in evil omens is a form of polytheism. None of us is free from such thoughts, but Allah removes them through reliance upon Him."In another wording, "Believing in evil omens is polytheism, believing in evil omens is polytheism," repeating it three times.
قال رسول الله ﷺ: الطيرة من الشرك، وما منا تطير، ولكن الله يذهبه بالتوكل وفي لفظ: الطيرة شرك، الطيرة شرك ثلاثا.
Narrated by Abu Dawud (3910), Tirmidhi (1614), Ibn Majah (3538), and Ahmad (3687, 4171), and Ibn Hibban (6122) and Hakim (17/1-18) graded it sahih. All of them narrated it through routes from Salama bin Kuhayl, from Isa bin Asim, from Zirr, from Abdullah bin Masud, who said, and then he mentioned it. The second wording belongs to Abu Dawud, and its chain of transmission is sahih.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith, we do not know it except through the hadith of Salama bin Kuhayl." End of quote.Hakim said, "This is a hadith whose chain is sahih, its narrators are trustworthy, and the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not narrate it."Tirmidhi said in Ilal al-Kabir (2/691), "Muhammad, meaning Bukhari, said, Sulayman bin Harb used to deny that this hadith, with this wording, 'none of us,' could be from the Prophet ﷺ, and he used to say, this appears to be the statement of Abdullah bin Masud himself."
