The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Faith has seventy-some or sixty-some branches. The highest of them is the declaration that there is no god but Allah, and the lowest is removing harm from the road. And modesty is a branch of faith."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: الإيمان بضع وسبعون أو بضع وستون شعبة، فأفضلها قول لا إله إلا الله، وأدناها إماطة الأذى عن الطريق، والحياء شعبة من الإيمان.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Faith (35:58) from Zuhayr bin Harb, who said, "Jareer narrated to us, from Suhayl, from Abdullah bin Dinar, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah," who related it. This is the wording given here.Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Faith (9) through another route from Abu Salih, with the wording, "Faith has over sixty branches, and modesty is one branch of faith." It appears that the uncertainty comes from Suhayl, but the compilers of the Sunan collections narrated it through his route as "over seventy" without any uncertainty. Some scholars have therefore given preference to this latter narration, first because it contains no hesitation, and second because it includes an addition from a trustworthy narrator, which is acceptable.Identifying and enumerating these branches would take a long time, and works have been composed on this subject. Among the best available today is the book Shuab al-Iman by Hafiz Bayhaqi, published in an edition verified by our esteemed brother Dr. Abdul-Ali Azhari.
