I was with the Prophet ﷺ while he was staying at Jiranah, between Mecca and Medina, and Bilal was with him. An Arabi came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Will you not fulfill for me what you promised me?"He said to him, "Receive good news."The man replied, "You have said 'receive good news' to me too often."So he turned to Abu Musa and Bilal as if angry and said, "He has rejected the good news, so the two of you accept it."They said, "We accept it."Then he called for a vessel containing water, washed his hands and face in it, and spat into it. Then he said, "Drink from it, and pour some over your faces and chests, and receive good news."So they took the vessel and did so. Umm Salama called out from behind the curtain, "Leave some for your mother."So they left a portion of it for her.
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4328), and Muslim in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (2497), both from Abu Kurayb Muhammad bin Ala, who said, Abu Usama narrated to us, from Burayd bin Abdullah, from Abu Burda, from Abu Musa, who said, and he mentioned it.
