The Prophet ﷺ intended to forbid naming children Yala, Barakah, Aflah, Yasar, Nafi, and similar names. Then I saw him remain silent about the matter afterward and say nothing further. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away without prohibiting it. Later, Umar intended to forbid it as well, but then he let the matter go.
أراد النبي ﷺ أن ينهى عن أن يسمى بيعلى، وببركة، وبأفلح وبيسار، وبنافع وبنحو ذلك، ثم رأيته سكت بعد عنها، فلم يقل شيئا، ثم قبض رسول الله ﷺ ولم ينه عن ذلك، ثم أراد عمر أن ينهى عن ذلك ثم تركه.
Muslim reported it in the Book of Manners (2138) from Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Abu Khalaf, who said, Rawh narrated to us, Ibn Jurayj narrated to us, Abu Zubayr informed me that he heard Jabir bin Abdullah say, and he mentioned it.Abu Dawud also reported it (4960) through the route of Amash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir, with this wording, "If I live, Allah willing, I will forbid my nation from naming their children Nafi, Aflah, and Barakah." Amash said, I do not know whether he mentioned Nafi or not, for a man would say, "Has Barakah come?" and they would say, "No."Its chain is hasan because of Abu Sufyan, whose name is Talha bin Nafi. He is truthful, and his narration from Jabir comes from a written collection.
