Muslim narrated it in the Book of Menstruation (347) from Abdul-Warith bin Abdul-Samad, who said, "My father narrated to me, from my grandfather, from Husayn." Yahya (that is, Ibn Abu Kathir) said, "Abu Salama informed me that Urwa bin Zubayr informed him that Abu Ayub informed him that he heard this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Muslim did not give the full wording, but simply referred it back to the hadith of Uthman.Abu Ayub also narrates it from Ubayy bin Kaab, the one who asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the man who has intercourse with his wife without ejaculating, and so on, the rest of the hadith. Abu Ayub continued to give rulings based on this even after the Prophet ﷺ, because the abrogation had not reached him.As for what Ibn Majah (607) and others narrated with the wording, "Water is required only from water," its chain of transmission is not strong. It includes Abdul-Rahman bin Saad, about whom Bukhari said, "There is something questionable about him." Despite this, Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators in Thiqat 5/93, and Hafiz said, "Acceptable," meaning acceptable if corroborated, otherwise his hadith is weak.
