The people of the Suffah were poor folk, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever has food for two, let him take a third with him, and whoever has food for four, let him take a fifth or a sixth."Abu Bakr brought three home with him, while the Prophet ﷺ took ten. The narrator said, "It was me, my father, and my mother." He continued, "I do not know whether he also said, 'and my wife and a servant,' shared between our house and Abu Bakr's house."Abu Bakr ate his evening meal with the Prophet ﷺ, then stayed until the night prayer was performed. He returned to the Prophet ﷺ, remaining with him until the Prophet ﷺ had eaten supper, then came home after a portion of the night had passed, as Allah willed. His wife said to him, "What kept you from your guests?" Or she said, "your guest?"He asked, "Have you not given them supper?"She replied, "They refused until you came. The food was offered to them, but they refused."The narrator said, "I went and hid myself."Abu Bakr called out, "You fool!" He cursed and reviled, then said, "Eat, may it bring you no pleasure!" He swore, "By Allah, I will never eat it."By Allah, we did not take a single morsel except that more rose up from beneath it, until they were satisfied, and the food became greater than it had been before. Abu Bakr looked at it, and there it was, as it had been or even more.He said to his wife, "Sister of Banu Firas, what is this?"She replied, "By the coolness of my eye, it is now three times greater than it was before."Then Abu Bakr ate from it and said, "That oath was only from Satan," meaning his oath not to eat. He ate a morsel from it, then carried it to the Prophet ﷺ, where it remained with him until morning. Now there was a treaty between us and a certain people, and the term of the treaty had ended. We were divided into twelve men, with each man having people with him. Allah knows best how many were with each man. They all ate from it, or as he said.
Bukhari related it in the Times of Prayer (602), and Muslim in Drinks (2057:176), both through Mutamir bin Sulayman, who said, "My father narrated to us, Abu Uthman narrated to us, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Bakr," and he mentioned it.
