I said, "Messenger of Allah, we have a foul-smelling path leading to the mosque. What should we do when it rains on us?"He replied, "Is there not a cleaner stretch of path after it?"She said, I answered, "Yes."He said, "Then this makes up for that."
Narrated by Abu Dawud (384) and Ibn Majah (533), both by way of Abdullah bin Isa, from Musa bin Abdullah bin Yazid, from a woman from Banu Abdul-Ashhal, who related the hadith. Its chain of transmission is sahih, and the fact that "a woman from Banu Abdul-Ashhal" is unidentified does not weaken it, for she is a companion. Munziri, Abdull-Haq Ishbili, and others have graded it sahih.Similar in meaning is what was related from a freed slave woman of Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, who said, "I used to trail my garment, and it would pass over dirty ground and clean ground. So I went to Umm Salama and asked her about that, and she said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "What comes after it purifies it."'"Narrated by Abu Dawud (383), Tirmidhi (143), Ibn Majah (531), and Ahmad (26488), all by way of Muhammad bin Umara, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim, from a freed slave woman of Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, who related it as mentioned. This freed slave woman of Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman is unidentified, and no one other than Muhammad bin Ibrahim has narrated from her.
