Someone asked, "Messenger of Allah, when a group of people comes to a house and one of them seeks permission to enter, does that suffice for all of them?"He replied, "Yes."The questioner asked, "And if one man among the group returns the greeting, does that suffice for all of them?"He replied, "Yes."The questioner asked, "When a group passes by and one of them gives the greeting of peace, does that suffice for all of them?"He replied, "Yes."The questioner asked, "And if one man among the group returns the greeting, does that suffice for all of them?"He replied, "Yes."

Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir (3/84) from Ibrahim bin Hashim Baghawi, who said, Kathir bin Yahya narrated to us, who said, Hafs bin Umar Raqashi narrated to us, who said, Abdullah bin Hasan bin Hasan bin Ali narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, who said, then he mentioned it. Its isnad is hasan because of Hasan bin Hasan bin Ali and Kathir bin Yahya, for both of them make the hadith hasan. As for Haythami, he said in Majma (8/35), "It contains Kathir bin Yahya, and he is daif." I say, he is truthful, as Abu Zura said, and Abu Hatim said, "His status is one of truthfulness." Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat, and he has a biography in Jarh wa Tadil (7/158) and Lisan Mizan (4/485).A note, in the printed edition of Mujam al-Kabir it appears as "Hafs bin Umar Raqashi," but the more likely correct form is "Hafs bin Amr Raqashi." He is Ibn Rabal Rabali, one of the men found in Tahdhib.Of similar meaning is what was narrated from Ali bin Abu Talib as a raised hadith, "It suffices for a group passing by that one of them offers the greeting of salam, and it suffices for those sitting that one of them returns it."Abu Dawud (5210), Bazzar (534), and Abu Yaala (441) all narrated it through the route of Saeed bin Khalid Khuzai, who said, Abdullah bin Fadl narrated to me, who said, Ubaydullah bin Abu Rafi narrated to us, from Ali bin Abu Talib, then he mentioned it.Saeed bin Khalid was declared daif by Abu Zura and Abu Hatim, and Bukhari said, "There is something questionable about him." Daraqutni, in Ilal (4/22), laid out the disagreement over its isnad, then said, "The hadith is not established, Saeed bin Khalid Madani narrated it alone from Abdullah bin Fadl, and he is not strong," meaning Khalid bin Saeed. Ibn Hibban said, "He was among those who erred until his errors became excessive, I am not pleased with relying on his report as evidence when he narrates it alone." Ibn Abdul-Barr said, "This is a hasan hadith with nothing to oppose it."I say, perhaps he said that because of its corroborating narrations, among them what came before, and among them what Malik narrated in the book of Salam (1) from Zayd bin Aslam, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The rider greets the one walking with salam, and if one of a group offers the greeting, it suffices for all of them." This, however, is mursal. The hadith has other corroborating narrations, but they are flawed. In accordance with this hadith, a group of scholars, including Malik and Shafii, held that if a man offers salam to a group and one of them returns the greeting, it suffices for all of them, and this falls within the meaning of His saying "then greet with a better greeting than it, or return it" [Nisa 4:86]. Others said, "Everyone who hears the greeting must return it."
