Abu Musa came to Umar bin Khattab and said, "Peace be upon you. This is Abdullah bin Qays." He was not granted permission to enter. He said again, "Peace be upon you. This is Abu Musa. Peace be upon you. This is al-Ashari." Then he left.Umar said, "Bring him back to me, bring him back to me." When Abu Musa came, Umar asked, "Abu Musa, what made you turn away? We were busy."Abu Musa replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Permission to enter is to be sought three times. If you are granted permission, enter, and if not, then return.'"Umar said, "You must bring me proof of this, or else I will do such and such to you."So Abu Musa went off. Umar said, "If he finds proof, you will find him at the pulpit this evening, and if he does not find proof, you will not find him there."When evening came, they found him there. Umar said, "Abu Musa, what do you say? Have you found someone?"He answered, "Yes, Ubayy bin Kaab."Umar said, "He is reliable."Umar then said, "Abu Tufayl, what does this man say?"He replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say that, son of Khattab, so do not be a torment upon the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Umar said, "Glory be to Allah, I only heard something and wished to verify it."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Manners (2154:37) from Husayn bin Hurayth Abu Ammar, who said, Fadl bin Musa related to us, Talha bin Yahya informed us, from Abu Burda, from Abu Musa Ashari, and he mentioned it.Ibn Hajar said in Fath al-Bari (commentary on hadith 6245), after pointing to the aforementioned narration of Muslim, "This is how it came in this route, and Talha bin Yahya has some weakness in him, and the narration of the majority is more likely to be the one preserved. It is possible to reconcile the two by saying that Ubayy bin Kaab came after Abu Saeed had already given testimony."
