The Prophet ﷺ said, "None of you should urinate into a hole in the ground. When you go to sleep, put out the lamp, for a mouse may drag away the wick and burn down the household. Tie up your waterskins, cover your drinks, and lock your doors at night."The narrators asked Qatada, "Why is urinating into a hole disliked?"He replied, "It is said that such holes are the dwellings of the jinn."
أن النبي ﷺ قال: لا يبولن أحدكم في الجحر، وإذا نمتم فأطفئوا السراج، فإن الفأرة تأخذ الفتيلة فتحرق أهل البيت، وأوكئوا الأسقية، وخمروا الشراب، وغلقوا الأبواب بالليل قالوا لقتادة: ما يكره من البول في الجحر؟ قال: يقال إنها مساكن الجن.
Ahmad (20775) and Hakim (1/186) both narrated it through the route of Muaz bin Hisham, who said, "My father narrated to us from Qatada, from Abdullah bin Sarjas," and then he related it. Abu Dawud (29), Nasai (34), and Ibn Jarud (34) all narrated it through the route of Muaz bin Hisham with the same chain, but limited to the prohibition against urinating in a hole. Its chain is sahih. Qatada heard from Abdullah bin Sarjas, as stated by Ibn Madini, Abu Zura, Abu Hatim, and Ahmad bin Hanbal in his son Abdullah's transmission.Hakim said, "Sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs, for both of them relied on all its narrators as evidence." Ibn Khuzayma and Ibn Sakan also graded it sahih, as noted by Hafiz in Talkhis (1/106).Hakim also related, on the authority of Ibn Khuzayma, that he said, "I prohibit urinating in holes because of the hadith of Abdullah bin Sarjas..." He then related the hadith along with Qatada's statement, and said, "I do not affirm the claim that these are the dwellings of the jinn, for that is merely Qatada's own statement."
