The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from facing the qiblah while urinating, yet I saw him a year before his death facing it while doing so.
نهى رسول الله ﷺ أن نستقبل القبلة ببول؛ فرأيته قبل أن يقبض بعام يستقبلها.
Abu Dawud (13), Tirmidhi (9), and Ibn Majah (325) all narrated it from Muhammad bin Bashshar, who said, Wahb bin Jareer narrated to us, who said, my father narrated to me, saying, I heard Muhammad bin Ishaq narrating from Abu Aban bin Salih, from Mujahid, from Jabir bin Abdullah, with this wording. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq, who is known for concealing links in his chains of transmission, though here he has explicitly stated that he heard it directly. Ibn Khuzayma also graded it sahih (58), narrating it from Muhammad bin Bashshar with the same wording.Daraqutni (58/1) and Hakim (1/154) both narrated it through the route of Yaqub bin Ibrahim bin Saad, from his father, from Ibn Ishaq, with the same wording. Hakim said, "It is sahih according to the criteria of Muslim."Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith. Ibn Lahia also narrated this hadith from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir, from Abu Qatada, that he saw the Prophet ﷺ urinating while facing the qibla. Qutayba narrated this to us, saying, Ibn Lahia narrated to us. And the hadith of Jabir from the Prophet ﷺ is more sahih than the hadith of Ibn Lahia." End of quote.I say, that is indeed so, for Ibn Lahia is well known to be daif, and perhaps he graded the hadith of Jabir as hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq, for he is trustworthy, and as for his concealment of links in transmission, it is removed by his explicit statement that he heard it directly.
