I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Which deeds are most beloved to Allah?"He replied, "Prayer at its appointed time."I asked, "Then which?"He said, "Then kindness to one's parents."I asked, "Then which?"He said, "Then jihad in the path of Allah."He said, "He told me these, and had I asked for more, he would have told me more."
سألت رسول الله ﷺ: أي الأعمال أحب إلى الله؟ قال: الصلاة على وقتها قلت: ثم أي؟ قال: ثم بر الوالدين قلت: ثم أي؟ قال: ثم الجهاد في سبيل الله قال: حدثني بهن ولو استزدته لزادني.
Bukhari narrated it in Adab (5970), and Muslim in Iman (85:139), both through the route of Shuba, from Walid bin Ayzar, that he heard Abu Amr Shaybani say, "The owner of this house told me," pointing to the house of Abdullah, then he related it.Similar in meaning is what was narrated from Abdullah bin Amr bin As, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "The Lord's pleasure lies in the father's pleasure, and the Lord's displeasure lies in the father's displeasure." Tirmidhi (1899) and Ibn Hibban (429) narrated it, both through the route of Khalid bin Harith, from Shuba, from Yaala bin Ata, from his father, from Abdullah bin Amr, who related it.Yaala's father is Ata Amiri Taifi, whom no one deemed reliable except Ibn Hibban, while Ibn Qattan and Dhahabi in al-Mizan considered him unknown, since no one narrated from him except his son. Tirmidhi then further criticized it for being a stopped narration, saying, after narrating it through the route of Muhammad bin Jafar, from Shuba, from Yaala bin Ata, from his father, from Abdullah bin Amr, in similar wording but without raising it to the Prophet, "This is more sahih. This is how the companions of Shuba narrated it, from Shuba, from Yaala bin Ata, from his father, from Abdullah bin Amr, as a stopped narration. We do not know of anyone who raised it to the Prophet except Khalid bin Harith, from Shuba, and Khalid bin Harith is trustworthy and reliable. I heard Muhammad bin Muthanna say, I have not seen in Basra anyone like Khalid bin Harith, nor in Kufa anyone like Abdullah bin Idris." End of quote.I say, since Khalid bin Harith is, as Tirmidhi described him, trustworthy and reliable, his addition is acceptable, as is known among the scholars of hadith. As for his statement, "We do not know of anyone who raised it to the Prophet except Khalid bin Harith," this is not accurate, for he was corroborated by Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi, whose narration is found in Hakim (4/151-152), and by Abu Ishaq Fazari, found in Abu Shaykh. These narrators reported it from Shuba as a raised narration. However, its defect lies in the unknown status of Yaala's father, who is Ata Amiri.
