"Instruct your husbands to cleanse themselves with water after relieving themselves, for I am too shy to tell them myself. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do so."
مرن أزواجكن أن يستطيبوا بالماء؛ فإني أستحييهم منه، فإن رسول الله ﷺ كان يفعله.
Reported by Tirmidhi (19) and Nasai (46), both from Qutayba, who said, Abu Awana narrated to us, from Qatada, from Muaza, from her.Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih." Ibn Hibban also graded it sahih (1443).I say, it is as he said, for its chain of transmission is sahih. Abu Awana is Waddah bin Abdullah al-Yashkuri, well known by his kunya, a reliable and firmly established narrator. Muaza is the daughter of Abdullah al-Adawiyya, Umm as-Sahba al-Basriyya, a reliable and virtuous narrator. Her statement, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do it," means that this is more fitting and better, and she did not mean that relying solely on stones is not permissible. felt too shy to command the men directly in this matter, so she conveyed to the women that they should tell their husbands to cleanse themselves with water. As for what has been reported from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It was revealed concerning the people of Quba, "In it are men who love to purify themselves, and Allah loves those who purify themselves" [Surah Tawbah 9:108]," he said, "They used to cleanse themselves with water, so this verse was revealed concerning them," this is a daif hadith. It was reported by Abu Dawud (44), Tirmidhi (3100), and Ibn Majah (357), all through the route of Muawiya bin Hisham, from Yunus bin Harith, from Ibrahim bin Abu Maymuna, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, and he related the hadith.Tirmidhi said, "It is gharib from this route." I say, it has two defects. Yunus bin Harith al-Thaqafi al-Taifi is daif, and Ibrahim bin Abu Maymuna is of unknown status. For more, see Minna Kubra (1/91).Among these narrations is the hadith of Uwaym bin Saida with a similar meaning, which also contains weakness, and its complete referencing will come in the book of tafsir.
