Muhaysa bin Masud and Abdullah bin Sahl set out toward Khaybar, then they parted ways among the palm groves. Abdullah bin Sahl was killed, and they suspected the Jews of the deed. His brother Abdul-Rahman, along with his cousins Huwaysa and Muhaysa, came to the Prophet ﷺ. Abdul-Rahman began to speak about his brother's case, though he was the youngest of them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let the elder speak first," or he said, "Let the eldest begin."So the other two spoke about the case of their companion. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Fifty of you may swear an oath against one of them, and he will be handed over to you."They said, "How can we swear about a matter we did not witness?"He said, "Then the Jews can clear themselves through the oaths of fifty of their men."They said, "Messenger of Allah, they are a disbelieving people."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid the blood-money for him from his own resources.Sahl said, "One day I entered an enclosure of theirs, and a she-camel from those camels kicked me with its leg."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Manners (6142-6143), and Muslim in the Book of Qasama (2:1669), both through Hammad bin Zayd, who said, "Yahya bin Saeed told us, from Bashir bin Yasar, from Sahl bin Abu Hathma and Rafi bin Khadij," who related it.
