The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the privy, so I brought him a vessel of water and he cleaned himself with it. Then he wiped his hand on the ground and washed it. After that, I brought him another vessel and he performed ablution with it.
دخل رسول الله ﷺ الخلاء، فأتيته بتور فيه ماء، فاستنجى، ثم مسح بيده في الأرض ثم غسلها، ثم أتيته بتور آخر فتوضأ به.
It was narrated by Abu Dawud (45), Nasai (50), Ibn Majah (358), and Ahmad (8104), and Ibn Hibban (1405) graded it sahih. All of them narrated it from the hadith of Sharik, from Ibrahim bin Jareer, from Abu Zura bin Amr bin Jareer, from Abu Hurairah, who related it. The wording given is Ahmad's. Sharik is Ibn Abdullah the judge, who had poor memory. He was followed by Aban bin Abdullah bin Abu Hazim, who said, "Ibrahim bin Jareer narrated to me," but he differed in the chain of transmission, saying, from his father, that the Prophet of Allah entered the thicket and relieved himself, and Jareer brought him a small water vessel, and he cleansed himself with it and wiped his hand with dust. This was narrated by Ibn Majah (359) and Nasai (51), and Ibn Khuzayma (89) graded it sahih, all of them by this route. Nasai said, "This is closer to being correct than the hadith of Sharik."But it is not as he said, for regarding Aban bin Abdullah, Ahmad said he was truthful and had sound narrations, Ajli said he was reliable, and Ibn Adi said, "I hope there is no harm in him," though Nasai and Ibn Hibban criticized him. On the whole, there is no harm in using him for corroborating narrations. Also in its chain is Ibrahim bin Jareer, who did not hear from his father, as stated by Ibn Main and Abu Hatim.Furthermore, Aban bin Abdullah Bajali also narrated it from a freed slave of Abu Hurairah, who said, "I heard Abu Hurairah say," and he related something similar with additions. This was narrated by Ahmad (8695), and thus the hadith reverts to being from the musnad of Abu Hurairah, which is the sahih version. As for his saying "tur" (with fatha on the taa and sukun on the waw), it is a copper vessel used for drinking and for wudu, and food may also be eaten from it at times. As for his saying "al-ghaydah" (with fatha on the ghayn), it refers to a place where trees cluster together. As for his saying "idawah," it is a small leather vessel for water. This hadith is to be applied in the desert. As for houses, it is recommended to wash the hands with soap after cleansing oneself and before performing wudu.
