The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I not tell you of something better in rank than fasting, prayer, and charity?"They replied, "Of course, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Reconciling between people, for corruption between people is the shaver."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: ألا أخبركم بأفضل من درجة الصيام والصلاة والصدقة؟ قالوا: بلى، يا رسول الله قال: إصلاح ذات البين، وفساد ذات البين الحالقة.
Reported by Abu Dawud (4919) and Tirmidhi (2640), both from the hadith of Abu Muawiya, from Amash, from Amr bin Mura, from Salim, from Umm Darda, from Abu Darda, who said the following. Ibn Hibban (5092) graded it sahih through this same route. Tirmidhi said, "This is a sahih hadith, and it is also narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said, 'It is the shaver, I do not mean it shaves the hair, but it shaves away the religion.'"As for his statement, "better than the rank of fasting, prayer, and charity," this superiority is not to be taken in an absolute sense, since many texts in the Book and the sunnah indicate the superiority of the obligatory acts and urge performing them at their proper time. Therefore this superiority is to be understood as applying to voluntary and supererogatory acts, for a man may occupy himself with mending relations between people and leave aside voluntary acts, unlike the obligatory acts, where his responsibility remains outstanding until he fulfills them.
