The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When one of you performs ablution, let him draw water into his nose and then blow it out. And whoever cleans himself with stones, let him use an odd number."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: إذا توضأ أحدكم فليجعل في أنفه ماء، ثم لينثر، ومن استجمر فليوتر.
Malik related it in the Book of Purification (2), from Abu Zinad, from Araj, from Abu Hurairah. He then mentioned it. Bukhari transmitted it through this route in the Book of Wudu (162), and he combined it with the hadith, "When one of you wakes from sleep, let him wash his hand before putting it into his wudu water, for none of you knows where his hand spent the night," because the chain of transmission is the same.Muslim also related it in the Book of Purification (237), through another route, from Sufyan, from Abu Zinad, from him.Malik also related it from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Idris Khawlani, from Abu Hurairah, with the wording, "Whoever performs wudu should clear his nose, and whoever cleans himself with stones should use an odd number." Muslim also related it through this route.Bukhari related it (161) through the route of Yunus, from Zuhri, in similar wording. Muslim also related it through the route of Yunus, except that he paired Abu Hurairah with Abu Saeed.Humaydi related it in his Musnad (957), from Sufyan bin Uyayna, who said, Abu Zinad narrated to us, from Araj, from Abu Hurairah, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When one of you cleans himself with stones, let him use an odd number, and when he clears his nose, let him do so with an odd number."
