I asked Abu Saeed, who was a friend of mine, and he said, "We observed itikaf with the Prophet ﷺ during the middle ten days of Ramadan. On the morning of the twentieth, he came out and addressed us, saying, 'I was shown Laylat al-Qadr, then I was made to forget it,' or 'I forgot it. So seek it in the last ten nights, on the odd-numbered ones. And I saw myself prostrating in water and mud.'"
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on the merit of Laylat al-Qadr (2016), and Muslim in the Book of Fasting (1167:216), both from the hadith of Hisham, from Yahya, from Abu Salama, and he related it.
