We would prepare his toothstick and water for purification. Allah would rouse him at whatever hour of the night He willed, and he would brush his teeth, perform ablution, and pray nine units of prayer, sitting only in the eighth.
كنا نعد له سواكه وطهوره، فيبعثه الله ما شاء أن يبعثه من الليل، فيتسوك ويتوضأ ويصلي تسع ركعات لا يجلس إلا في الثامنة.
Muslim narrated it in Prayer of Travelers and Its Shortening (746) from Muhammad bin Muthanna Anazi, who said, Muhammad bin Abu Adi narrated to us, from Saeed, from Qatada, from Zurara bin Awfa, from Saad bin Hisham, from her, and it is a portion of a long hadith. It is also found in Sunan Abu Dawud (56) through the route of Bahz bin Hakeem, from Zurara bin Awfa, with the same chain, in abbreviated form with the wording, "The Prophet ﷺ would have his water for wudu and his tooth-stick placed ready for him, and when he rose at night he would relieve himself and then use the tooth-stick." As will come later.
