Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

Ibn Abbas reported, "For a whole year I wanted to ask Umar bin Khattab about a verse, but I could not bring myself to ask him out of awe for him, until he set out for the pilgrimage and I went with him. On our way back, at some point along the road, he turned aside toward an arak tree to relieve himself. I waited for him until he was finished, then walked along with him."I asked, "Commander of the Believers, who were the two of his wives who joined together against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"He replied, "Those were Hafsa and Ayesha."I said to him, "By Allah, I had been wanting to ask you about this for a year, but I could not, out of awe for you."He said, "Do not do that. Whenever you think I have any knowledge, ask me, and if I know it, I will inform you."Umar then said, "By Allah, in the days of ignorance we used to give no consideration to women at all, until Allah Almighty revealed concerning them what He revealed, and assigned them what He assigned. One day, while I was thinking over some matter, my wife said to me, 'You should do such and such.'I said to her, 'What business is this of yours? Why are you interfering in something I am deciding?'She said to me, 'How strange of you, son of Khattab! You do not want to be answered back, yet your daughter answers back the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he remains angry the whole day.'So I took my cloak and left at once, until I came to Hafsa.I said to her, 'My daughter, are you really answering back the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he remains angry the whole day?'Hafsa said, 'By Allah, we do answer him back.'I said, 'You know that I am warning you against the punishment of Allah and the anger of His Messenger. My daughter, do not let this one deceive you, the one whose beauty has impressed her and whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ loves,' meaning Ayesha. Then I went out and came to Umm Salama, since she was a relative of mine, and spoke with her.Umm Salama said to me, 'How strange of you, son of Khattab! You have meddled in everything, until you now seek to interfere between the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his wives.'She rebuked me in a way that broke my resolve regarding what I had been pressing about, so I left her.I had a companion from the Ansar. Whenever I was absent, he would bring me the news, and whenever he was absent, I would bring him the news. At that time we were anxious about a certain king of Ghassan, who, we had been told, intended to march against us, and our hearts were filled with worry over him.My Ansari companion came knocking at the door, saying, 'Open up, open up!'I said, 'Has the Ghassani come?'He said, 'Worse than that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has separated himself from his wives.'I said, 'May the noses of Hafsa and Ayesha be in the dust!'Then I took my garment and went out until I arrived. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in an upper room of his, reached by a step-ladder, and a black servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was at the head of the stairs.I said, 'This is Umar.' So I was given permission to enter."Umar continued, "I recounted to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ this whole story. When I reached what Umm Salama had said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled. He was lying on a mat with nothing between him and it, and beneath his head was a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibers. By his feet were tanning leaves piled up, and at his head were hides hanging on the wall. I saw the marks of the mat on the side of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I wept.He asked, 'What makes you weep?'I said, 'Messenger of Allah, Khosrau and Caesar are in what they are in, while you are the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Are you not pleased that they should have this world, and you the Hereafter?'"
