We went out with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey in which the people suffered hardship. Abdullah bin Ubayy said to his companions, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until they disperse from around him." And he said, "If we return to Madinah, the mightier will surely drive out the weaker from it."I came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him. He sent for Abdullah bin Ubayy and questioned him, and he swore emphatically that he had not done it.They said, "Zayd has lied to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."What they said weighed heavily on me, until Allah revealed confirming my truthfulness "When the hypocrites come to you" [Munafiqun 63:1].Then the Prophet ﷺ called them so that he might seek forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads away.Regarding His words "like propped up timber" [Munafiqun 63:4], he said, "They were the most handsome of men."
Bukhari narrated it in the tafsir (4903), and Muslim in the qualities of the hypocrites (2772), both through Zuhayr bin Muawiya, who said, Abu Ishaq narrated to us, he said, I heard Zayd bin Arqam, and he mentioned it.Bukhari added (4901), through another route from Zayd bin Arqam, who said, the Messenger of Allah sent for me and recited it to me, then said, "Allah has confirmed you were truthful."This surah was revealed during the expedition against Banu Mustaliq in the year five, as is explained in detail in the books of the Prophet's biography.
