When the verse "And warn your closest kin" [Shuara 26:214] was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ climbed up Mount Safa and began calling out, "Sons of Fihr! Sons of Adi!" addressing the various clans of Quraysh, until they gathered together. If a man could not come out himself, he sent a messenger to see what the matter was.Abu Lahab came along with the rest of Quraysh, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Tell me, if I informed you that cavalry was in the valley about to attack you, would you believe me?"They replied, "Yes. We have never known you to tell anything but the truth."He said, "Then I am a warner to you before a severe punishment."Abu Lahab said, "May you perish for the rest of the day! Is this why you gathered us?"Then the verse was revealed, "Perish the hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he! His wealth has not availed him, nor what he has earned" [Masad 111:1–2].
Bukhari narrated it in the Tafsir (4770) and Muslim in the Faith (208), both from the hadith of Amash, who said, Amr bin Mura narrated to me, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it. The wording given is Bukhari's, and Muslim's wording is close to it.
