Only four years passed between our embrace of Islam and the time when Allah reproached us with this verse, "Has the time not come for those who believe that their hearts should be humbled at the remembrance of Allah?" [Hadid 57:16].
ما كان بين إسلامنا وبين أن عاتبنا الله بهذه الآية: {ألم يأن للذين آمنوا أن تخشع قلوبهم لذكر الله} إلا أربع سنين.
Muslim narrated it in tafsir (3027) from Yunus bin Abdul-Ala Sadafi, "Abdullah bin Wahb informed us, Amr bin Harith informed me, from Saeed bin Abu Hilal, from Awn bin Abdullah, from his father, that Ibn Masud said," and he related it as mentioned before.Ibn Masud's statement indicates that this verse is Makkan, because he embraced Islam early and made both migrations, the first being to Abyssinia in the fifth year.The rest of the verses are Madinan without any disagreement among the scholars, because of what appears in the tenth verse, "Not equal among you are those who spent before the victory and fought. Those are greater in degree than those who spent afterward and fought" [Hadid 57:10]. What is meant by "the victory" is either the conquest of Makkah or the victory of Hudaybiya. In either case, it would be Madinan.
