The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The fire that the children of Adam kindle is one part out of seventy parts of the fire of Hell."They said, "Messenger of Allah, even this fire would have been enough."He replied, "It has been exceeded by sixty-nine parts."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: نار بني آدم التي يوقدون جزء من سبعين جزءا من نار جهنم فقالوا: يا رسول الله إن كانت لكافية. قال: إنها فضلت عليها بتسعة وستين جزءا.
Malik related it in the chapter on Hell (1), from Abu Zinad, from Araj, from Abu Hurairah, and mentioned it as such. Bukhari related it in the chapter on the beginning of creation (3265), through the route of Malik, with similar wording. Muslim related it in the chapter on Paradise and the description of its bliss and its people (2843), through another route from Abu Zinad, with similar wording, adding at the end, "All of it is like its heat."His saying "and as a provision for travelers" [Waqiah 56:73] means benefit "for the travelers," that is, those who journey. The meaning is that the people of the desert and travelers benefit from it more than a settled person does, because they light it at night so that wild beasts flee from them, and those who are lost find their way by it, along with other benefits.They also said, al-muqwi is one of those words that carry opposite meanings. The poor man is called muqwi because he is devoid of wealth, and the rich man is called muqwi because of his ability to obtain what he wants. The meaning is that it contains benefit for the rich and the poor alike, and no one can do without it. Baghawi mentioned this in his Tafsir.
