We were talking with the Prophet of Allah ﷺ one night until our conversation grew long, then we returned home. When morning came, we went early to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, and the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "The prophets were shown to me last night with the followers of their nations. A prophet ﷺ would come accompanied by three men of his people, another prophet would come with a small band of his people, another prophet ﷺ with just a handful of his people, and another prophet ﷺ with not a single person of his people with him. Then Musa bin Imran came before me with a great multitude from the Children of Israil. When I saw them, I admired them and said, 'My Lord, who are these?' He said, 'This is your brother Musa bin Imran along with his followers.' Then I saw a great hill, like one of the hills of Makkah, that was filled with the faces of men. I said, 'My Lord, who are these?' He said, 'Your nation.' Then I was told, 'Are you pleased?' I said, 'My Lord, I am pleased. My Lord, I am pleased.' Then I was told, 'Among these are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning.'"Then Ukashah bin Mihsan, of the tribe of Banu Asad bin Khuzaymah, stood up and said, "Prophet of Allah, ask your Lord to make me one of them."He said, "O Allah, make him one of them."Then another man stood up and said, "Prophet of Allah, ask your Lord to make me one of them."He said, "Ukashah has beaten you to it."Then the Prophet of Allah said, "May my father and mother be your ransom, if you are able to be among the seventy, then be so. If you fall short and cannot, then be among the people of the hill. If you fall short of that as well, then be among the people of the horizon, for I saw there a great many people contending with one another."Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "I truly hope that those who follow me from my nation will be a quarter of the people of Paradise."We called out, "Allahu Akbar!"Then he said, "I hope they will be a third."We called out, "Allahu Akbar!"Then he said, "I hope they will be half."We called out, "Allahu Akbar!"Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ recited, "A multitude from the former generations and a multitude from the latter generations" [Waqiah 56:39–40].The Muslims then discussed among themselves about these seventy thousand, saying, "We think they must be people who were born into Islam and continued acting upon it until they died upon it."Word of their discussion reached the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "It is not so. Rather, they are those who do not seek to be treated by ruqyah, do not cauterize themselves, do not believe in omens, and place their trust in their Lord."
Reported by Ahmad (3989), Bazzar (1440, 1441), and graded sahih by Ibn Hibban (6431), Hakim (4/577-578), and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (10/5), all of them through routes from Qatada, from Hasan and Ala bin Ziyad, from Imran bin Husayn, from Abdullah bin Masud, who narrated it. The wording given here is that of Ibn Hibban, and the wording of the others is similar, except that Imam Ahmad did not give the actual text. Its chain of transmission is sahih.
