When Quraysh gathered in Dar al-Nadwah to deliberate about the Prophet ﷺ, one of them suggested, "Confine him in chains and wait for death to overtake him, just as it overtook the poets before him such as Zuhayr and Nabighah. He is no different from any of them."Concerning this statement of theirs, Allah the Exalted revealed, "Or do they say, 'He is a poet for whom we await the calamity of time'?" [Tur 52:30].
أن قريشا لما اجتمعوا في دار الندوة في أمر النبي ﷺ، قال قائل منهم: احبسوه في وثاق، و تربصوا به المنون حتى يهلك كما هلك من قبله من الشعراء: زهير والنابغة، إنما هو كأحدهم، فأنزل الله تعالى في ذلك من قولهم: {أم يقولون شاعر نتربص به ريب المنون}
Tabari narrated it in his Tafsir (11/134-135) from Saeed bin Yahya Umawi, who said, my father told me, who said, Muhammad bin Ishaq told us, from Abdullah bin Abu Najeeh, from Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it.The narrators of this chain are trustworthy except for Muhammad bin Ishaq, who is truthful with hasan hadith, but he practiced tadlis and used the ambiguous form "an" here. However, the suspicion of tadlis is removed, since he explicitly stated that he heard it directly in another narration recorded by Tabari in his History (2/370), where he said, Ibn Humayd told us, who said, Salama told us, who said, Muhammad bin Ishaq told me, who said, Abdullah bin Abu Najeeh told me, from Mujahid bin Jabr Abu Hajjaj, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it.
