I saw Ali perform ablution three times, then he stood up and drank what was left of his ablution water and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did just as I have done."
رأيت عليا توضأ ثلاثا، ثم قام فشرب فضل وضوئه وقال: صنع رسول الله ﷺ كما صنعت.
Nasai (136) narrated it through Shubah, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Hayya, and he mentioned something similar. Tirmidhi (48) narrated it through Abu Ahwas, from Abu Ishaq, with the same wording. Its chain of transmission is hasan, because of Abu Hayya, for he is "acceptable" as stated in Taqrib, though he has been corroborated, as will come in the hadith of Abd Khayr in the chapter on the description of the Prophet's ﷺ ablution. This hadith will be repeated in full in the chapter on the description of the Prophet's ﷺ ablution.
