The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "These lineages of yours are not grounds for insulting anyone. You are all the children of Adam, like grains filling a measure that has not yet been filled to the brim. No one has any superiority over another except through religion or righteous deeds. It is enough disgrace for a man to be obscene, foul-tongued, miserly, and cowardly."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: إن أنسابكم هذه ليست بسباب على أحد، وإنما أنتم ولد آدم، طف الصاع لم تملؤوه، ليس لأحد على أحد فضل إلا بالدين أو عمل صالح، حسب الرجل أن يكون فاحشا بذيا، بخيلا جبانا.
Ahmad (17313) narrated it from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Ibn Lahia narrated to us, from Harith bin Yazid, from Ali bin Rabah, from Uqba bin Amir, and he related it.Tabari also narrated it in his Tafsir (21/387), and Tahawi in Sharh Mushkil Athar (3459), both of them from Yunus bin Abdul-Ala, who said, Ibn Wahb informed us, who said, Ibn Lahia narrated to me, with similar wording.Its chain is hasan because of Abdullah bin Lahia, about whom there is well-known discussion, but when Qutayba bin Saeed narrates from him, his hadith is hasan, and likewise when Abdullah bin Wahb narrates from him.His saying, "level the measure, you have not filled it," means, all of you, in your lineage back to a single father, are on one level in falling short and not reaching completeness and perfection, like a measure that has not been filled to the top of the vessel or the like.
