Abu Jubayra bin Dahhak reported,

This verse was revealed concerning us. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina, every one of us had two or three names. Whenever he would call a man by one of his names, we would say, "Messenger of Allah, he gets angry at being called that." So Allah revealed, "And do not insult one another with nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after faith. And whoever does not repent, then it is those who are the wrongdoers" [Hujurat 49:11].

عن أبي جبيرة بن الضحاك قال

فينا نزلت الآية، قدم رسول الله ﷺ المدينة وما منا رجل إلا له اسمان أو ثلاثة، كان إذا دعا الرجل بالاسم، قلنا: يا رسول الله! انه يغضب من هذا، فأنزلت: {ولا تنابزوا بالألقاب بئس الاسم الفسوق بعد الإيمان ومن لم يتب فأولئك هم الظالمون}

His saying, "What is above it. As for those who believe, they know that it is the truth from their Lord. And as for those who disbelieve, they say, 'What did Allah intend by this as an example?' He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient, who break the covenant of Allah"
