Abu Musa Ashari reported,

I heard al-Hasan saying, "By Allah, al-Hasan bin Ali advanced to meet Muawiya with battalions like mountains."Amr bin As said, "I see battalions that will not turn back until they have killed their counterparts."Muawiya, who was by Allah the better of the two men, said to him, "Amr, if these kill those, and those kill these, who will be left to handle the people's affairs? Who will care for their women? Who will look after their dependents?"So he sent to him two men from Quraysh, from Banu Abd Shams, Abdul-Rahman bin Samura and Abdullah bin Amir bin Kurayz, and said, "Go to this man. Present the offer to him, speak with him, and propose terms."They went to him and entered upon him. They spoke and put forward the proposal. Al-Hasan bin Ali said to them, "We are the sons of Abdul-Muttalib. We have received some of this wealth, and this community has shed much blood."They said, "He offers you such-and-such, and proposes this to you, and asks you."He asked, "Who will guarantee this for me?"They replied, "We will guarantee it for you."He did not ask them about anything without their saying, "We will guarantee it for you." So he made peace with him.Al-Hasan said, "I heard Abu Bakra saying, 'I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the pulpit with al-Hasan bin Ali beside him, turning his face toward the people once and toward him another time, saying, "This son of mine is a master, and perhaps Allah will reconcile through him two great factions of the Muslims."'"

His saying, "And if two factions among the believers fight, then make settlement between them. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers and fear Allah that you may receive mercy."
