It was narrated by Tirmidhi (3267), Nasai in Kubra (11451), and Ibn Jareer Tabari in his tafsir (21/345), all of them through Husayn bin Waqid, from Abu Ishaq, from Bara bin Azib, who related it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Husayn bin Waqid, for he is hasan al-hadith. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith."It has also been narrated concerning Aqra bin Habis that he called out to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from behind the apartments, saying, "O Messenger of Allah." But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not answer him, so he said, "O Messenger of Allah, indeed my praise is an adornment, and my criticism is a disgrace." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, as Abu Salama related, "That is Allah ."This was narrated by Ahmad (15991), Ibn Jareer Tabari in his tafsir (21/346), and Tabarani in Kabir (1/277), all of them through Affan bin Muslim, who said, Wahib narrated to us, who said, Musa bin Uqba narrated to us, from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman, from Aqra bin Habis, who related it.Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman was born in the twenties or so of that century, and Aqra bin Habis died during the caliphate of Uthman bin Affan, according to the more likely view. For this reason, most scholars have ruled out the possibility that Abu Salama heard directly from Aqra bin Habis. As for what appears in Tabari's tafsir, "from Abu Salama, who said, Aqra bin Habis told me," it seems that this is a mistake on the part of one of the narrators.
