Anas bin Malik reported,

When this verse was revealed, "O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet" up to His saying "while you do not perceive" [Hujurat 49:2], Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas, who had a loud voice, said, "I am the one who used to raise my voice above the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. My deeds have been nullified. I am among the people of the Fire." He sat in his house grieving. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ noticed his absence, so some of the people went to him and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been asking after you. What is the matter with you?"He replied, "I am the one who raised my voice above the voice of the Prophet ﷺ and spoke loudly to him. My deeds have been nullified, and I am among the people of the Fire."They went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of what he had said. The Prophet ﷺ said, "No, rather he is among the people of Paradise."Anas said, "We used to see him walking among us knowing that he was one of the people of Paradise. On the day of Yamamah, some of us began to retreat. Then Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas came, having perfumed himself with hanut and donned his shroud, and he said, 'What an evil way to treat your comrades.' He fought them until he was killed."

His saying, "What is above it. As for those who believe, they know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, 'What did Allah intend by this as an example?' He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient"
