I asked Salama bin Akwa, "On what did you pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hudaybiyah?"He replied, "On death."
قلت لسلمة بن الأكوع: على أي شيء بايعتم رسول الله ﷺ يوم الحديبية؟ قال: على الموت.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4169) and Muslim in the Book of Leadership (18:1860), both from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, "Hatim (that is, Ibn Ismail) narrated to us from Yazid bin Abu Ubayd," and he related it.His statement "on death" - in some narrations it comes as "they pledged allegiance to him on steadfastness and that they would not flee." So whoever said "on death" intended what necessarily follows from it, and whoever said "on steadfastness" was relating the actual fact.
