The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Between the two blasts of the trumpet there will be forty."The people asked, "Abu Hurayrah, forty days?"He replied, "I cannot say."They asked, "Forty months?"He replied, "I cannot say."They asked, "Forty years?"He replied, "I cannot say.""Then Allah will send down water from the sky, and they will sprout forth like vegetation. There is nothing of a person that does not decay except for one bone, the tailbone, and from it creation will be reassembled on the Day of Resurrection."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: ما بين النفختين أربعون قالوا: يا أبا هريرة، أربعون يوما؟ قال: أبيت. قالوا: أربعون شهرا؟ قال: أبيت. قالوا: أربعون سنة؟ قال: أبيت. ثم ينزل الله من السماء ماء، فينبتون كما ينبت البقل. قال: وليس من الإنسان شيء إلا يبلى إلا عظما واحدا، وهو عجب الذنب، ومنه يركب الخلق يوم القيامة.
Bukhari narrated it in the book of tafsir (4814), and Muslim in the book of Tribulations and Signs of the Hour (2955), both of them through Amash, who said, I heard Abu Salih say, I heard Abu Hurairah say, and then he mentioned it. The wording given here is Muslim's.His statement, "And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead" [Zumar 39:68], means they will be struck with terror, as Allah says in another verse, "And the Day the Horn is blown, whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will be terrified" [Naml 27:87]. The meaning is that terror will be cast upon them until they are struck down and die, and this happens after the first blowing of the Horn. Then the Horn will be blown a second time, and the people will rise, as Allah says, "Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on" [Zumar 39:68].This is what a number of scholars have said, and it is supported by the long hadith of Abdullah bin Amr in Sahih Muslim, in the book of Tribulations (2940), "Then the Horn will be blown, and no one will hear it without tilting one side of his neck and raising the other. He said, the first to hear it will be a man plastering the trough for his camels. He said, he will fall dead, and the people will fall dead. Then Allah will send down, or he said, will send down rain like fine dew, or like shade, from which the bodies of the people will grow again. Then the Horn will be blown once more, and at once they will be standing, looking on."See the hadith in full detail in the section on Signs of the Hour. The word layt means the side of the neck, that is, its side. So this hadith mentions only two blowings of the Horn.Bayhaqi, Ibn Taymiya, and others said that the blowings of the Horn are three. The first is the Blowing of Terror, as in Surah Naml. The second is the Blowing of Stunning and Death. The third is the Blowing of Bath, as in this verse from Surah Zumar. All of these are possible.And Allah knows best what is correct.
