Umar bin Khattab reported,

Umar bin Khattab said:When we resolved to emigrate to Medina, Ayyash bin Abu Rabia, Hisham bin al-Aas bin Waail al-Sahmi, and I agreed to meet at the acacia trees in the lowlands of Banu Ghifar above Sarif. We said, "Whoever does not arrive there by morning has been detained, so the other two should go on without him."By morning, Ayyash bin Abu Rabia and I were at the acacia trees, but Hisham was held back. When we reached Medina, we stayed with Banu Amr bin Awf in Quba. Then Abu Jahl bin Hisham and Harith bin Hisham went out to find Ayyash bin Abu Rabia, who was their cousin and their half-brother through their mother. They came to Medina while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was still in Mecca. They spoke with Ayyash and said, "Your mother has vowed that no comb will touch her hair until she sees you, and that she will not take shelter from the sun until she sees you." So he felt pity for her.I said to him, "Ayyash, by Allah, these people only want to lure you away from your religion, so beware of them. By Allah, if lice troubled your mother she would comb her hair, and if Mecca's heat became unbearable she would take shelter."He replied, "I will fulfill my mother's oath, and I have wealth there that I can collect."I said, "By Allah, you know I am among the wealthiest of Quraysh. Take half my wealth, but do not go with them."He refused everything except going with them. When he insisted, I said, "Since you are determined to do this, take this she-camel of mine. She is a noble, well-trained mount. Stay on her back, and if you sense any treachery from them, escape on her."So he set out with them on the camel. When they had gone some distance along the way, Abu Jahl said to him, "Nephew, by Allah, my camel has become too rough for me. Will you not let me ride behind you on your she-camel?"He answered, "Yes."Ayyash made his camel kneel, and they made theirs kneel as well, so they could move onto his mount. But when they were all on the ground, the two attacked him, bound him tightly, and tied him up. They then brought him into Mecca and persecuted him until he gave in.We used to say, "Allah will accept neither obligatory nor voluntary deeds nor any repentance from those who have given in. They are people who knew Allah, then returned to disbelief because of trials that befell them." They themselves said the same thing about themselves. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina, Allah Most High revealed concerning them, and concerning what we said and what they said about themselves, "Say, My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful. And return to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you, then you will not be helped. And follow the best of what was revealed to you from your Lord before the punishment comes upon you suddenly while you do not perceive." [Zumar 39:53–55]Umar bin Khattab said, "I wrote these verses out with my own hand on a sheet and sent them to Hisham bin al-Aas."Hisham bin al-Aas said, "When the sheet reached me, I began reading it at Dhu Tuwa, going up and down the valley with it, but I could not grasp its meaning. So I said, 'O Allah, give me understanding of it.' Then Allah Most High cast into my heart that it had been revealed about us, about what we used to say within ourselves and what was being said about us. So I returned to my camel, mounted it, and joined the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Medina."
