His people said about him that he had a scrotal hernia. One day he went out to bathe and placed his clothes on a rock. The rock then ran off with his clothes, and he ran after it naked until it brought him to where the children of Israil were gathered. They saw him and realized he had no such defect.That is the meaning of His statement, "So Allah cleared him of what they said, and he was honorable before Allah" [Ahzab 33:69].
في قوله تعالى: {لا تكونوا كالذين ءاذوا موسى فبرأه الله مما قالوا وكان عند الله وجيها}

Ibn Abu Shayba (32509), Hakim (2/422), and Ibn Jareer Tabari in his Tafsir (19/190–191) all narrated it through the route of Abu Muawiya, who said, Amash narrated to us, from Minhal bin Amr, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Minhal bin Amr, whose hadith is hasan. Hakim said, "This is a sahih hadith, according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs."His saying "adar" comes from adira, yadaru, adaran, udratan, or udratan, meaning his testicle swelled. A man described as adar has enlarged testicles, and this is one of the congenital defects.This is the well-known account of Banu Israil's mistreatment of Musa . Some commentators and historians have mentioned two other stories about Banu Israil's mistreatment of Musa
.1. The story of Harun's death, as narrated by Ibn Muni in his Musnad, Matalib Aliyah (3455), and by Tahawi in Sharh Mushkil Athar (68/1), both through the route of Abbad bin Awwam, who said, Sufyan bin Husayn narrated to us, from Hakam (that is, Ibn Utayba), from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, from Ali bin Abu Talib, regarding His saying
, "Do not be like those who harmed Musa, and Allah cleared him" [Ahzab 33:69]. He said, "Musa and Harun climbed the mountain, and Harun died. Banu Israil said, 'You killed him. He loved us more than you did, and he was gentler with us than you were.' So they harmed him with that accusation. Allah Almighty then commanded the angels, who carried him and passed by Banu Israil. The angels, peace be upon them, spoke of his death until Banu Israil knew that he had indeed died. So they took him away and buried him, and none of Allah's
creation ever discovered his grave except the vulture, which Allah
then made deaf and mute."Ibn Hajar said, "This is a sahih chain of transmission." I say, it contains Sufyan bin Husayn, who is daif regarding Zuhri but hasan regarding others, and this narration is of the latter kind, except that it stops at Ali bin Abu Talib and does not reach the Prophet, and it may well be one of the Israelite narrations.2. The story of Musa
with Qarun, where Qarun ordered a prostitute to claim that Musa had tried to seduce her, and this became the cause of Qarun's destruction. This is what Ibn Abu Hatim narrated in his Tafsir (3018/9) from Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman Sahmi, who said, Mahadir narrated to us, who said, Amash narrated to us, from Minhal, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who said,"Qarun was from the people of Musa and was his cousin. He pursued knowledge until he had gathered a great deal of it, and he remained in that state until he transgressed against Musa and envied him. Musa said to him, 'Allah has commanded me to take zakat, one dirham from every forty dirhams.' He refused. Musa said, 'One dirham from every hundred dirhams.' He refused. Musa said, 'No one can bear even that much, up to a thousand.' He said, 'One dinar, or dirham, from every thousand.' Qarun said, 'Musa wants to devour your wealth. What shall we do?' They said, 'We will follow whatever you command.' So they sent for a woman from among the prostitutes of Banu Israil and said to her, 'We will give you whatever you ask if you testify against Musa that he committed adultery with you.' She said, 'Yes.'Qarun then went to Musa and said, 'Gather Banu Israil and tell them what your Lord has commanded you.' Musa said, 'Yes,' and gathered them. They asked, 'What has He commanded you?' He said, 'He has commanded me that you worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, that you maintain family ties, and such and such, and He has commanded me that the fornicator, once married, if he commits adultery, should be stoned.' They said, 'Even if it were you?' He said, 'Yes.' 'And that the thief, if he steals, should have his hand cut off.' They said, 'Even if it were you?' He said, 'Yes.' They said, 'You have indeed committed adultery.' He said, 'Then send for her.'So they sent for the woman, and she came. They said, 'What do you testify against Musa?' Musa said to her, 'I ask you by Allah, say nothing but the truth.' She said, 'Since you have asked me by Allah, they summoned me and offered me a reward to falsely accuse you, but I testify that you are innocent and that you are the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'Musa then fell down prostrating, weeping. Allah revealed to him, 'What makes you weep? We have given you power over the earth, so command it and it will obey you.' He raised his head and said, 'Take them.' So the earth seized them, pointing to his own hips, and they cried, 'O Musa!' He said, 'Take them,' pointing to his own chest, and they cried, 'O Musa!' He said, 'Take them.' And they were swallowed up in it."Then Allah said, "So We caused the earth to swallow him and his home" [Qasas 28:81] to the end of the verse.Then Banu Israil were struck with severe distress and hunger. They came to Musa and said, "Pray for us." So he prayed to Allah, and Allah said, "Do you pray to Me for a people between whom and Me the sins have grown so dark?" Then He said, "Indeed, they called upon you when they were perishing, but had they called upon Me, I would have answered them."Ibn Hajar graded its chain of transmission as sahih in Fath al-Bari (448/6). It appears that this too is something taken from Banu Israil, and the well-known and sahih account is what is firmly established in Sahihayn regarding the story of the pursuing stone. Allah Almighty knows best.The mistreatment of Musa
by Banu Israil was more extensive than this, and the Quran mentions some of it, including the statement of Allah Almighty,1- "Musa said to his people, 'Seek help in Allah and be patient. Indeed, the earth belongs to Allah. He gives it as an inheritance to whom He wills of His servants, and the final outcome is for the righteous.' They said, 'We have been harmed before you came to us and after you came to us.' He said, 'Perhaps your Lord will destroy your enemy and grant you succession in the land, so He may see how you act.'" [Araf 7:128–129]2- "And the people of Musa made, in his absence, out of their ornaments, a calf, an image having a lowing sound. Did they not see that it could not speak to them nor guide them to any way? They took it as a god, and they were wrongdoers. And when regret overcame them, and they saw that they had gone astray, they said, 'If our Lord does not have mercy on us and forgive us, we will surely be among the losers.' And when Musa returned to his people, angry and grieved, he said, 'Evil is what you have done in my absence. Did you hasten the matter of your Lord?' And he threw down the tablets and seized his brother by the head, dragging him towards himself. Harun said, 'Son of my mother, the people overpowered me and were about to kill me, so do not let the enemies gloat over me, and do not place me among the wrongdoing people.' Musa said, 'My Lord, forgive me and my brother, and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the most merciful of the merciful. Indeed, those who took the calf will be struck by wrath from their Lord and humiliation in the life of this world. Thus do We recompense those who invent falsehood. But those who did wrong and then repented after that and believed, indeed your Lord is, after that, forgiving and merciful.'" [Araf 7:148–153]3- "And when you said, 'O Musa, we will never believe you until we see Allah plainly.' So the thunderbolt seized you while you were looking on." [Baqarah 2:55]4- "And when you said, 'O Musa, we cannot endure one kind of food, so pray to your Lord for us to bring forth for us from what the earth grows, its herbs, its cucumbers, its garlic, its lentils, and its onions.' He said, 'Would you exchange what is better for what is worse? Go down into a city, for you shall have what you have asked for.' And they were struck with humiliation and poverty, and they returned with anger from Allah. That was because they used to disbelieve in the signs of Allah and kill the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were transgressors." [Baqarah 2:61]5- "And when Musa said to his people, 'Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.' They said, 'Do you take us in mockery?' He said, 'I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant.' They said, 'Pray to your Lord for us to make clear to us what she is.' He said, 'He says she is a cow neither old nor young, but median between that, so do what you are commanded.' They said, 'Pray to your Lord for us to make clear to us what her color is.' He said, 'He says she is a yellow cow, bright in color, pleasing to the observers.' They said, 'Pray to your Lord for us to make clear to us what she is. Indeed, the cows look alike to us, and if Allah wills, we will be guided.' He said, 'He says she is a cow neither trained to plow the earth nor to irrigate the field, sound, without blemish.' They said, 'Now you have brought the truth.' So they slaughtered her, but they were about not to do it." [Baqarah 2:67–71]6- "And when We took your covenant and raised over you the mount, saying, 'Take what We have given you with determination and listen.' They said, 'We hear and we disobey.' And their hearts absorbed the calf out of their disbelief. Say, 'How evil is that which your faith enjoins upon you, if you should be believers.'" [Baqarah 2:93]7- "And when Musa said to his people, 'O my people, remember the favor of Allah upon you when He placed among you prophets and made you kings and gave you what He had not given anyone else among the worlds. O my people, enter the sacred land which Allah has decreed for you, and do not turn back, for then you will become losers.' They said, 'O Musa, indeed there is a tyrannical people there, and we will never enter it until they leave it. If they leave it, then we will enter.' Two men from among those who feared, upon whom Allah had bestowed favor, said, 'Enter upon them through the gate, for once you have entered it, you will surely be victorious. And upon Allah rely, if you should be believers.' They said, 'O Musa, we will never enter it as long as they remain in it. So go, you and your Lord, and fight. We are staying right here.' He said, 'My Lord, I have power over none but myself and my brother, so decide between us and the defiantly disobedient people.' He said, 'Then indeed, it is forbidden to them for forty years, during which they will wander lost in the land. So do not grieve over the defiantly disobedient people.'" [Maidah 5:20–26]8- "And when Musa said to his people, 'O my people, why do you harm me while you know that I am the Messenger of Allah to you?' So when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people." [Saff 61:5]
