I was eating hays with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from a wooden bowl when Umar passed by. He called him over, and Umar joined to eat. His finger touched mine, and he said, "Hiss," or "Ugh, if I were obeyed concerning you women, no eye would ever see you." Then the verse of the veil was revealed.

Narrated by Nasai in Kubra (11355), Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (1053), and Tabarani in Awsat (2971), all of them via Sufyan, from Masaar, from Musa bin Abu Kathir, from Mujahid, from Ayesha, and mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Haythami said in Majma (7/93), "Tabarani related it in Awsat, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Musa bin Abu Kathir, who is reliable."Muhammad bin Bishr bin Farafisa related it from Masaar in the same way, as a mursal narration, as Ibn Abu Shayba related it (32680). The ruling belongs to whoever added [to the chain], and in particular the one who related it as connected is Sufyan bin Uyayna, except that Daraqutni preferred the mursal version. Ilal (3683). And Allah knows best. Her statement, "then the hijab was revealed," does not mean that the hijab was revealed immediately after this incident. The verse of the hijab was revealed in connection with the story of Zaynab, when the Prophet ﷺ married her, as mentioned in verse (53) of Surah Ahzab. So her statement, "then the hijab was revealed," means after her story with Umar, and the marriage to Zaynab, and all of that occurred within a close span of time.A note, several causes have been mentioned for the revelation of the verse on the hijab, and their meaning is that these causes all occurred together within a close span of time, so the revelation of the verse on the hijab was attributed to each one of them. His saying, "But when you are invited, then enter, and when you have eaten, then disperse" [Ahzab 33:53]
