The Messenger of Allah ﷺ left the slain of Badr for three days, then he came to them, stood over them, and called out to them, saying, "Abu Jahl bin Hisham! Umaya bin Khalaf! Utbah bin Rabia! Shayba bin Rabia! Have you not found what your Lord promised you to be true? For I have found what my Lord promised me to be true."Umar heard the Prophet's ﷺ words and said, "Messenger of Allah, how can they hear, and how can they answer, when they have already begun to rot?"He replied, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, you do not hear what I say better than they do, but they are unable to answer."Then he ordered that they be dragged and thrown into the well of Badr.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Paradise, its Description, and its People (2874:77) from Haddab bin Khalid, who said, Hammad bin Salama narrated to us, from Thabit Bunani, from Anas bin Malik, and he related it.His statement, "So they were thrown into the well of Badr," Umaya bin Khalaf was not actually in the well, because he was heavily built, and after being dragged his body swelled up and his limbs broke apart, so they threw stones and dirt over him until he was covered. But he was close to the well, so he was called out to along with those who were called out to.
