The Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted Abu Bakr and Umar regarding the captives.Abu Bakr said, "Messenger of Allah, spare your people and take ransom from them, using it to strengthen yourself."Umar bin Khattab said, "Kill them."The Prophet said, "If the two of you were to agree, I would not disobey you both."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ adopted Abu Bakr's view, so Allah revealed, "It is not fitting for a prophet to have captives until he has thoroughly subdued the land. You desire the goods of this world, but Allah desires the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise" [Anfal 8:67].He said, then the verses were revealed, "And indeed We created man from an extract of clay" until the end of the verses. Umar said, "Blessed is Allah, the best of creators." Then the verse was revealed, "So blessed is Allah, the best of creators".
Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir (11/438–439), Bayhaqi in ad-Dalail (5/288), and Maqdisi in al-Mukhtarah (10/160–162), all of them through the hadith of Bishr bin Sari, who said, Rabah bin Abu Maruf al-Makki narrated to us, from Salim bin Ajlan al-Aftas, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it.Its chain is hasan because of Rabah bin Abu Maruf al-Makki, for his hadith is hasan. The full hadith is mentioned regarding the eighty-fourth verse (84) of Surah Tawbah. As for His saying, "We created man from an extract of clay" [Tawbah 9:84 - note: verse reference retained as given], that is, the father of mankind, namely Adam , was created from clay, as has come in the hadith.
