Bara bin Azib reported,

We went out with the Prophet ﷺ to attend the funeral of a man from the Ansar. He recounted a long hadith, in which it was mentioned concerning the soul of the disbeliever that the angels ascend with it, and they do not pass by any group of angels without those angels asking, "What is this foul soul?"The angels carrying it reply, "So-and-so, son of so-and-so," using the ugliest names by which he was called in the world, until they reach the lowest heaven. Permission is sought for it to enter, but it is not granted. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited, "Indeed, those who deny Our verses and are arrogant toward them, the gates of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel passes through the eye of a needle. And thus do We recompense the criminals" [Araf 7:40].Then Allah عز وجل says, "Record his book in Sijjin in the lowest earth," and his soul is flung down. Then he recited, "And whoever associates partners with Allah, it is as though he had fallen from the sky and been snatched by birds or the wind had blown him to a far-off place" [Hajj 22:31].His soul is then returned to his body, and two angels come to him and seat him upright. They ask him, "Who is your Lord?" … and the hadith continues.
