There is a verse in the Book of Allah about which people never ask me, and I do not know whether they already understand it and so have no need to ask, or whether they are unaware of it and so do not think to ask.Someone said, "And which verse is that?"He replied, "A verse which, when it was revealed, 'Indeed, you and whatever you worship other than Allah are the firewood of Hell. You will be brought to it' [Anbiya 21:98], weighed heavily upon the people of Makkah, and they said, 'Muhammad has insulted our gods.'Then Ibn Zibara stood up and asked, 'What is the matter with you?'They said, 'Muhammad has insulted our gods.'He asked, 'What did he say?'They said, 'He said, "Indeed, you and whatever you worship other than Allah are the firewood of Hell. You will be brought to it."'He said, 'Call him to me.' So Muhammad was called, and Ibn Zibara said, 'Muhammad, does this apply to our gods in particular, or to everything that has been worshipped besides Allah?'He answered, 'Rather, it applies to everything that has been worshipped besides Allah' .Ibn Zibara said, 'Then we have bested him, by the Lord of this House! Muhammad, do you not claim that Isa is a righteous servant, that Uzayr is a righteous servant, and that the angels are righteous servants?'He said, 'Yes.'Ibn Zibara said, 'Well then, these Christians worship Isa, these Jews worship Uzayr, and these Banu Mulayh worship the angels.'At this the people of Makkah clamoured in triumph, and then there was revealed, 'Indeed, those for whom the decree has already gone forth from Us' (that is, Isa, Uzayr, and the angels) 'they will be kept far from it' [Anbiya 21:101]. And there was revealed, 'And when the son of Maryam was presented as an example, at once your people laughed aloud' [Zukhruf 43:57]."

It was narrated by Ahmad (2918), Tabarani in al-Kabir (12/153), and Tahawi in Sharh Mushkil Athar (986), all of them through Asim bin Bahdala, from Abu Razeen Masud bin Malik al-Asadi, from Abu Yahya al-Araj, from Ibn Abbas, who related it. Its chain is hasan because of Asim bin Bahdala, for his hadith is hasan, and likewise it contains Abu Yahya al-Araj, who is Musaddaa al-Muraqqab, about whom Ammar Duhni said, "He had knowledge concerning Ibn Abbas." Ikrima corroborated him in Tahawi (988).Abdullah bin Zabara accepted Islam after the conquest of Makkah, and his Islam was excellent. Ibn Hajar said in al-Kafi al-Shaf (pp. 111-112), "It has become widespread on the tongues of many non-Arab scholars and in their books that the Prophet ﷺ said to Ibn Zabara regarding this incident, 'How ignorant you are of the language of your people, for I said, "And what do you worship," which refers to what has no reason, and I did not say, "And whom do you worship," which is something without any basis. It is not found with a chain of transmission or without one.'"
