The Prophet ﷺ came knocking at his door one night when he and Fatimah were there, and asked, "Will you not pray?"Ali replied, "Messenger of Allah, our souls are in the hand of Allah. When He wishes to rouse us, He will rouse us."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away when I said that to him, and as he was leaving I heard him striking his thigh and saying, "But man is, more than anything, contentious" [Kahf 18:54].
Bukhari related it in tafsir (4724), and Muslim in the prayer of travelers (775), both through Zuhri, from Ali bin Husayn, that Husayn bin Ali told him, from Ali bin Abu Talib, who then narrated it. The wording given is Muslim's, while Bukhari's wording is abridged.
