Regarding the verse "Those whom they invoke themselves seek the means of access to their Lord" [Isra 17:57], he said, "There were some humans who used to worship a group of jinn. The jinn embraced Islam, but the humans continued in their worship of them, so this verse was revealed: 'Those whom they invoke themselves seek the means of access to their Lord' [Isra 17:57]."
{أوليك الذين يدعون يبتغون إلى ربهم الوسيلة} قال: كان نفر من الإنس يعبدون نفرا من الجن، فأسلم النفر من الجن. واستمسك الإنس بعبادتهم، فنزلت: {اولىك الذين يدعون يبتغون الى ربهم الوسيلة}
Bukhari narrated it in the tafsir (4714), and Muslim in the tafsir (29:3030), both of them through Sufyan, from Amash, from Ibrahim, from Abu Muamar, from Abdullah bin Masud, who related it. The wording given is that of Muslim, and the wording of Bukhari is similar.
