Imam Ahmad narrated it (14878) from Qutayba, who said, Ibn Lahia told us, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir, who said, and he related it. Its isnad is hasan on account of Ibn Lahia, for there is criticism directed at him, except that the narration of the Abadila and Qutayba bin Saeed from him is hasan, and this narration is one of those.Imam Ahmad also narrated it (14765) from Musa, who said, Ibn Lahia told us, from Abu Zubayr, who said, I asked Jabir, "Did the Prophet ﷺ say anything about bird-omens and contagion?" Jabir said, I heard him say, "The fate of every person is bound to his neck."His statement, "And every person We have fastened his fate to his neck" [Isra 17:13], means that He has made the record of every person's deeds, good and bad, hanging around his neck for the whole span of his life, and on the Day of Resurrection He will gather all his deeds for him in a book which will be given to him, either in his right hand if he is blessed, or in his left hand if he is wretched, and he will be told, "Read what is in it, and hold yourself accountable."And His statement, "spread open" [Isra 17:13], means opened so that he and others may read it, and this reflects the perfection of His justice, in that He made it so that a person is not held accountable for the deeds of another, nor is another held accountable for his deeds.
