When the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ illness grew severe, he was reminded about the prayer. He said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."Ayesha said, "Abu Bakr is a tender-hearted man. When he recites, weeping overcomes him."He said, "Tell him to lead the prayer."She raised it with him again, and he said, "Tell him to lead the prayer. You are like the women around Yusuf."
لما اشتد برسول الله ﷺ وجعه، قيل له في الصلاة، فقال: مروا أبا بكر فليصل بالناس، قالت عائشة: إن أبا بكر رجل رقيق، إذا قرأ غلبه البكاء، قال: مروه، فيصلي، فعاودته، قال: مروه، فيصلي، إنكن صواحب يوسف.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Adhan (682), and Muslim in the Book of Prayer (418:94), both of them through Zuhri, who said, "Hamza bin Abdullah bin Umar informed me, from his father," and he mentioned it. The wording given here is Bukhari's.Ayesha's repeated request stemmed from consultation, owing to their marital relationship, not from any objection to the Prophet's ﷺ decision. His saying, "You are like the companions of Yusuf," means this in the sense of your persistence in pressing for what you want and lean toward, so the comparison applies only to the persistence and insistence in the request.
