When Uthman had finished his ablution he said, "By Allah, I am going to tell you a hadith. By Allah, were it not for a verse in the Book of Allah, I would not have told it to you. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'No man performs ablution, doing it well, and then prays a prayer, without being forgiven whatever he did between that prayer and the one that follows it.'"Urwa said that the verse is "Indeed, those who conceal what We have revealed of clear proofs and guidance" up to His words "those who curse" [Baqarah 2:159].
فلما توضأ عثمان قال: والله لأحدثنكم حديثا، والله لولا آية في كتاب الله ما حدثتكموه، إني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: لا يتوضأ رجل فيحسن وضوءه ثم يصلي الصلاة إلا غفر له ما بينه وبين الصلاة التي تليها. قال عروة: الآية {إن الذين يكتمون ما أنزلنا من البينت والهدى} إلى قوله: {اللاعنون} [البقرة: ١٥٩].
Bukhari related it in the Book of Wudu (160), and Muslim in the Book of Purification (227: 6), both through the route of Ibrahim bin Saad, from Salih bin Kaysan. Ibn Shihab said, but Urwa relates it from Humran, that he said, then he mentioned it.Ahmad related it (513), and Bazzar (405), and Tabari in his Tafsir (12/615), and Ibn Abu Hatim in his Tafsir (6/2092), all of them through the route of Abu Aqeel, who is Zahra bin Mabad, that he heard Harith, the freedman of Uthman bin Affan, say, Uthman sat one day, and we sat with him, and the muezzin came to him, so he called for water in a vessel, I think it held about a mudd, and he performed wudu, then he said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform wudu just as I have performed it," then he said, "Whoever performs wudu as I have performed it, then stands and prays the Dhuhr prayer, will be forgiven for whatever came between it and the Fajr prayer. Then if he prays Asr, he will be forgiven for whatever came between it and the Dhuhr prayer. Then if he prays Maghrib, he will be forgiven for whatever came between it and the Asr prayer. Then if he prays Isha, he will be forgiven for whatever came between it and the Maghrib prayer. Then perhaps he will spend his night tossing and turning, then if he rises, performs wudu, and prays Fajr, he will be forgiven for whatever came between it and the Isha prayer. And these are the good deeds that erase the bad deeds."They said, "These are the good deeds, but what are the lasting ones, O Uthman?" He said, "They are, there is no god but Allah, glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, Allah is greatest, and there is no power and no strength except through Allah."Its isnad is hasan because of Harith, the freedman of Uthman, for although no one besides Ibn Hibban rated him trustworthy, this hadith is essentially his.
