He gathered his people and said, "People of the Ashariyyun, assemble and bring together your women and your children. I will teach you the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ which he prayed for us in Medina."So they gathered, bringing their women and children with them. He performed ablution and showed them how to do it, completing the ablution to all its proper places. When the shadows began to lengthen and the sun had passed its peak, he stood and gave the call to prayer. He arranged the men in the front row, the boys in a row behind them, and the women in a row behind the boys. Then the iqamah was given. He stepped forward, raised his hands, and said the takbir. He recited the opening of the Book and an easy surah. Then he said the takbir and bowed, saying, "Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him," three times. Then he said, "Allah hears whoever praises Him," and stood upright. Then he said the takbir and fell down in prostration. Then he said the takbir and raised his head. Then he said the takbir and prostrated again. Then he said the takbir and rose to stand. So his takbirs in the first cycle were six, and he said the takbir again when he rose for the second cycle. When he had finished his prayer, he turned his face toward his people and said, "Memorize my takbirs, and learn my bowing and prostration, for this is the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ which he used to pray for us at this very hour of the day."Then he said, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished his prayer, he turned his face toward the people and said, 'People, listen and understand, and know that Allah has servants who are neither prophets nor martyrs, yet the prophets and martyrs envy them for their stations and their nearness to Allah.'"A man from the Arabi at the far edge of the gathering knelt down and gestured with his hand toward the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and said, "Prophet of Allah, people who are neither prophets nor martyrs, whom the prophets and martyrs envy for their stations and their nearness to Allah, describe them to us, make them clear to us."The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lit up at the Arabi's question, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "They are people from various tribes and scattered clans, with no close kinship ties binding them together. They loved one another for the sake of Allah and were sincere with one another. On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will set up for them pulpits of light and seat them upon them. He will make their faces light and their garments light. People will be terrified on the Day of Resurrection, but they will not be terrified. They are the friends of Allah, upon whom there shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve."
Ahmad (22906) narrated it, and the wording is his, as did Abdullah bin Mubarak in Zuhd (714), and Ibn Jareer in his commentary (12/212), all of them via the route of Abdul-Hameed bin Bahram Fazari, who said, Shahr bin Hawshab narrated to us, Abdul-Rahman bin Ghanm narrated to us, that Abu Malik Ashari gathered his people, then he mentioned it. Its isnad is hasan, because of the discussion regarding Shahr bin Hawshab.Ahmad (22894) and Tabarani in Kabir (3/329) both narrated it from the hadith of Abdul-Razzaq, and it is in Musannaf (20324), from Maamar, from Ibn Abu Husayn, from Shahr bin Hawshab, from Abu Malik, then he mentioned it. Shahr bin Hawshab did not meet Abu Malik Ashari. The narration of Abdul-Hameed bin Bahram is the preserved one, because he was the most constant companion of Shahr bin Hawshab among people. It has been reported from some of the early generations that the friends of Allah are those who, when seen, cause Allah to be remembered. As for His statement, "No fear will be upon them" [Yunus 10:62], meaning regarding the future, and "nor will they grieve" [Yunus 10:62], meaning regarding the past, rather they rely upon their Lord. And it has come in the revelation, "Indeed, those who have said, 'Our Lord is Allah,' and then remained on a right course, the angels will descend upon them, saying, 'Do not fear and do not grieve, but rejoice in the paradise you were promised.'" [Fussilat 41:30]
