I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a shabby state, and he asked, "Do you have any wealth?"I replied, "Yes."He asked, "What kind of wealth?"I said, "Every kind of wealth, camels, slaves, horses, and sheep."He said, "When Allah gives you wealth, let its effect be seen on you." Then he said, "Do the camels of your people give birth to offspring with sound ears, and then you take a knife and cut their ears, saying, 'This is a bahirah,' and you slit them, or slit their skins, and say, 'This is a surm,' forbidding them to yourself and your family?"I said, "Yes."He said, "What Allah has given you is lawful for you. The forearm of Allah is stronger." And perhaps he said, "The forearm of Allah is stronger than your forearm, and the knife of Allah is sharper than your knife."I said, "Messenger of Allah, what about a man whom I visit and he neither honors me nor offers me hospitality, and then he comes to stay with me. Should I repay him in kind, or should I show him hospitality?"He said, "Show him hospitality."
Ahmad (15888) narrated it, and the wording is his, along with Abu Dawud (4063), Tirmidhi (2006), Ibn Hibban (5416), and Hakim (24/1–25 and 4/181), all of them from the hadith of Abu Ishaq, who said, "I heard Abu Ahwas Awf bin Malik bin Nadla narrate from his father," who said, and he mentioned it.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith."Hakim said, "Its chain is sahih."His words "Or do you fabricate lies against Allah?" refer to their saying, "Allah commanded us to do it" [Araf 7:28].
