The Prophet ﷺ said, "Time has come full circle to its form on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months, four of which are sacred. Three are consecutive, Dhul-Qadah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Muharram, and Rajab of Mudar, which falls between Jumada and Shaban."Then he asked, "What month is this?"We answered, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He remained silent until we thought he would give it a different name. Then he said, "Is it not Dhul-Hijjah?"We replied, "Yes."He asked, "What land is this?"We answered, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He remained silent until we thought he would give it a different name. Then he said, "Is it not the Sacred Town?"We replied, "Yes."He asked, "What day is this?"We answered, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He remained silent until we thought he would give it a different name. Then he said, "Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?"We replied, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Your blood, your wealth, and your honor are sacred to one another, just as this day of yours is sacred, in this land of yours, in this month of yours. You will meet your Lord, and He will question you about your deeds. Do not return after me to disbelief, striking one another's necks. Let those present convey this to those absent, for perhaps some who receive it may grasp it better than some who heard it directly."Then he said, "Have I conveyed the message?"
Bukhari narrated it in the tafsir (4662), and Muslim in qasama (1679), both through the route of Ayub, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from Ibn Abu Bakra (that is, Abdul-Rahman), from Abu Bakra, and he related it. The wording given is that of Muslim, while the wording of Bukhari is abridged.
